Studies on the Storage Iron of the Central Nervous System

Abstract
The author determined by a chemical method the storage iron concentrations of the various portions of the central nervous system in normal rabbits and in the rabbits intravenously administered with 10mg of colloidal iron per kg body weight, and obtained the following results.
1. The mean storage iron concentration of the gray matter of the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum was about 1.5mg/100g wet tissue, and that of the white matter of the cerebral cortex, the midbrain, the pons, the medulla oblongata and the cervical cord about 1.0mg/100g wet tissue.
2. The hemosiderin iron fraction predominated over the ferritin iron fraction in the gray matter of the cerebral cortex, the mid-brain, the pons, the medulla oblongata and the cervical cord, but both fractions were almost equal in the white matter of the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum.
3. After intravenous administration of the colloidal iron the storage iron increased markedly in the gray matter¢¥ of the cerebral cortex and the mid-brain, but slightly in the white matter of the cerebral cortex, the pons, -the cerebellum, the medulla oblongata and the cervical cord.
